Nate Miyaki – The Next Crow?

Could this be the next Crow?

A buddy of mine is a huge fan of the movie The Crow,  and the original comic book series by James O’Barr.  He recently read that Hollywood is planning on filming a Crow remake.  He sent me an email, “Bradley Cooper as the Crow? C’mon.  They need an action star, not an actor.  Why don’t you put something together and send it into Relativity Media (the studio making it)?”

I have to admit, this tugged at my heart strings.  Before getting into fitness, I actually was a film major in college and toured as a professional wrestler.  I thought my career would be in entertainment somehow.  Then I grew up.

And I am a huge fan of the original Crow movie with Brandon Lee.  I could probably recite every line.

So bear with me on this one.  I thought I would write a fun little post about the 4 reasons why I should be the next Crow.  No practical fitness info for you in this one, but at least it will help you get to know a little bit more about the person you are taking all of this health and fitness advice from (and as you’ll see, I’m a pretty weird dude).

Fitness America Results

Backstage at Fitness America

Nothing like half naked photos to hook readers into a blog post right?

Normally, we like to keep our posts, articles, and this site in general, geared towards educational content that you can apply in your own life to achieve your health and fitness goals.  But a lot of our friends and family have been asking us how our competition went (we really do appreciate that support by the way).

So unfortunately, this blog post is all about us, us, us.  Sorry, we promise we’ll get back to some more meaningful and useful content in the next installment.  But for now, some fitness ridiculousness:

Fitness America Weekend

Nate "Mugshot" Miyaki on 11.15.11

Kalai "Guns" Diamond

It’s almost Fitness America Weekend.  What does that mean?  Absolutely nothing if you are a normal, sane person.  But if  you are a ridiculously vain bodybuilding or fitness person thinking to yourself what Ron Burgundy once graciously said aloud,  “I look good.  I mean really good.  Hey everyone, come and see how good I look”, then it is a chance to put yourself out there in front of industry professionals.

Some of the best natural bodybuilders and fitness models compete in different events over the course of a weekend in Vegas.  And I use the word “compete” loosely, because it obviously is a subjective sport with judging based on how you look.  Its more about exposing yourself, if you get what I’m saying?

With all of these hyper-fit people gathered in one place, magazine editors, photographers, supplement, and fitness clothing manufacturers come through the Golden Nugget Casino to scout new talent.  For the fitness-type, it means potential sponsorships, business opportunities, and partnerships.

With the pressure on, a lot of athletes will follow crazy, extreme, crash-diet and (over)training protocols to get in shape for this one weekend, unknowingly (or knowingly) compromising long-term metabolic, hormonal, and overall health.  I guess if you are trying to make a living as a fitness model or athlete, you gotta’ do what you gotta’ do.  But that’s NOT the route Kalai and I wanted to take.

Here’s the deal.  We don’t make our living from being fitness athletes or models.  I make my living writing about nutrition, consulting with companies, and training/advising private clients.  Kalai has a career completely outside of the fitness industry (thank Bruce Lee Philosophy or whatever higher power you believe in) as a manager at one of the top medical schools in the country.  But we get involved with the madness for a few reasons:

Content, Content, Content

What’s up my friends?

Well, its been awhile since my last post.  But its not because I’ve been sitting on my a$$.  I’ve been busy creating a bunch of content, both for this site and for some of the other fitness outlets I am associated with.  So here is everything that has been going on:

1. I think 2 new articles went up on T-Nation since we last talked.  I’m starting to build an audience over there and it is really helping me get my name out in the industry.  Here are the articles:

New Starchy Carb Food Pyramid
5 Ways to Improve Insulin Sensitivity

2. We’ve started and have been filling out the video exercise library.  Here it is:

Video Exercise Library

3.  Coach Shawn Toussaint and I were guests on Whole Body Talk, a weekly fitness podcast.  We talked about natural bodybuilding and the ins and outs of body composition transformations.  Here is the link:

Whole Body Talk: Shawn and Nate on Natural Bodybuilding

4. Kalai and I are going to stop running the other site we had started — Fat America Fit America — and just focus on this one.  Which means Kalai is joining this site and will be posting up content as well.

5. I’m taking a month off from training after next week to focus on finishing my book.  Hopefully by the end of that process I’ll have all of my theories — both science and practical strategies — all in one comprehensive place.

Alright.  Until next time, take care.  And thanks a lot for the continued support!

Hapa’s and Ronin

Happy Halloween!  Do you have your costumes prepped and ready to go?  I used to go as The Crow almost every year — the original Crow with Brandon Lee, not the horrible sequels.  I think Edward Furlong was the last Crow — ridiculous.  But I haven’t been able rally and roll the last few years.  The last Halloween I actually went out there was a gang fight right in front of us, and two people were shot about a block away.  I figured I’d stay away from that stuff for a while.  I don’t need to risk getting killed to have a good time (it’s funny how things change when you actually start to have something to lose).

This past week I had the honor of being asked to write a guest post for HapaVoice.com.  It was a great experience.  This was my first non-fitness related writing piece since I took up the pen.  I enjoyed the change of pace.  This is from their home page:

ha•pa (hä’pä) adj. 1. Slang. Of mixed racial heritage with partial roots in Asian and/or Pacific Islander ancestry. n. 2. Slang. A person of such ancestry.

Hapa, literally “half” in Hawaiian, was originally used as a derogatory term to describe people of biracial ancestry. Today, many multiracial individuals of Asian or Pacific Islander descent have embraced the word as a term of prideful self-identification. Although some object to the term’s appropriation and perceived misuse outside of its traditional Hawaiian context, “Hapa” has been widely adopted by the Asian and Pacific Islander multiracial communities, and even by some multiracial, non-Asians.

While many Hapas take pride in their ancestry, some find that their multiracial identity creates personal dilemmas and social challenges.

HapaVoice.com was started by Erica Johnson to provide a resource and community for anyone struggling with identity.  I think it is a great resource for Hapa’s, but lessons can be learned no matter who you are or what your background is.  We all need to be more accepting of others’ ethnicities, backgrounds, and life philosophies.

But don’t worry, I haven’t forgotten about the fitness game.  This week I want to introduce you to my network of health & fitness professionals (The Ronin Warriors).  To be the best you have to surround yourself with the best.  These are the people I go to when a question or topic is outside of my personal area of expertise.

As you know I primarily focus on physique development, fat loss, and body composition transformations.  But my team has it all covered: fitness psychology, medical nutrition therapy, rehabilitation, posture/alignment corrections, and sport performance training.  We’re growing every day.  I am excited to keep brining you new tools and content so this site becomes your go-to health & fitness resource.

Check out the HapaVoice.com piece if you are interested in something different.  Then check out the Ronin Team.

See you next time my friends.

IT’S ALIVE!

I’ve been slacking on the blog posts lately.  Sorry about that.  I’ve been working hard on some other aspects of the website/online business.  I started a Twitter account, linked it to Facebook, linked it to the website, etc.  Nate Miyaki is going high-tech, which is completely against his nature, as is referring to himself in the third person.  But hey, I just found out yesterday that my wife likes the Rock??  So expect more third person references, People’s Elbows, and eyebrow raises out of me.  Can you smell what “Miyak” is cooking?

My goal is to make this website as comprehensive as possible so it can become a valuable instructional tool.  Bodybuilding and fitness is my passion.  I’ve learned a lot over the last 15 years about the physique transformation process — from formal education, training/nutrition certifications, thousands of hours reading and doing personal research, competing in bodybuilding/fitness competitions, prepping for photo shoots, and practical experience coaching hundreds of clients — and I want to share that information with all of you.

I can only train so many clients one-on-one, yet I believe everyone deserves access to top-quality fitness information.  There’s a lot of biased misinformation out there (for a variety of reasons – none to truly help YOU), so I want this site to become a trusted resource where you can get honest, no bullshit info.  I’m not going to sugar coat stuff.  I’m not going to hold your hand.  I’m not going to tell you what you want to hear.  I’m going to tell you what you need to hear.

But what you will get is everything I think you need to know to get in top “appearance-based” shape.  I’m not holding anything back.  Everything I would tell the people I love the most about health and fitness WILL be on this site.  Just ask my wife.  She’s helping me with the whole web development process — but don’t bring up the Rock to her or I will find you.

To be honest, I believe the content has been there for some time.  What was holding me back was my lack of tech knowledge.  Well, I’m happy to say I’ve met some great people over the last few months that are helping me overcome that fear and get that content out to you.

So here is what you can expect over the next couple of months from this website:

  1. Weekly blog posts (I promise)
  2. More and better training and nutrition principles.  I want you to know exactly what you should be doing for optimal physique development.
  3. The Body Composition 101 Series.  This is a compliment to my Nutrition 101 Series, and will go into the science behind why I think you should train a specific way if your primary goal is physique enhancement.
  4. Some video clips.  We’re starting to film some time this month.  So look for the YouTube Channel soon.
  5. Regular tweets.  Follow me at www.twitter.com/SenshiFitness

Til next time, train hard, eat right, and follow the Way of the Physique Warrior.

Reading, Writing and Photographs

Well, lots of exciting stuff has happened since my last post.  Here’s what’s going on:

1.  I got my first article officially published. Bodybuilding.com picked up one of my nutrition articles, set up a cool bio page for me, and asked me to regularly write two articles a month.  I’m excited because I’ve been a huge fan of this site for years and it is great exposure — they get thousands of hits daily.  Check them out!

2.  I got the official, professional photos from my Musclemania America Contest from last year, finally!  I’ve added them to the gallery section if you want to check them out.

3.  There was a great article in the NY Times about the importance of diet for fat loss. It basically reinforces what I’ve been preaching for years — exercising is ineffective for fat loss unless you have a solid nutrition plan to back it up.  Read it here.

Okay, I’m working on a few new articles and should have them up for next time.

Take it easy,

Nate
